REGISTRATION SURGES FOR REVITALIZED SACRAMENTO MARATHON
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- With one month remaining before race day, registration has doubled from one year ago for the 2003 Sacramento Marathon, race officials have announced.
The 27th annual event, which will feature an expanded event schedule, including indoor and outdoor expos, and a new host hotel, will be held Oct. 5 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at William Land Park. The park is located near Freeport Blvd. and Sutterville Rd. across from Sacramento City College.
"We now have entrants from six states and three countries," said Paul Smith, who with John MacLachlan heads the marathon's new management team. "We're getting a lot of new interest this year, particularly with internet registration."
MacLachlan of Incline Village, Nev., is president of the Sacramento Marathon and CEO of Racewalking International, Inc. (RWI). Smith of Sacramento, Calif., is vice president of marketing for the Sacramento Marathon and a long-time racewalking and fitness enthusiast.
The two businessmen and sports entrepreneurs comprise RWI Sports Management Group, which assumed management responsibilities for the Sacramento Marathon earlier this year.
Since its debut in 1977, the Sacramento Marathon has continued to offer long-distance runners an event true to its motto: "The Fast, Flat and Friendly Place To Run."
In conjunction with the Downtown Holiday Inn, the race's new host hotel, the marathon will feature a pre-race expo at the hotel and a post-race expo near the finish line.
As per its long-standing tradition, the Sacramento Marathon will begin and end in William Land Park. In addition to its usual marathon and half-marathon options, a four-person marathon relay for runners and walkers has been added to the event.
The course's starting line and turnaround point have been adjusted. The finish will include a longer concluding straightaway to incorporate more shaded areas of William Land Park. Runners will no longer enter the cobblestoned section of Old Town Sacramento. Instead, they will reach the turnaround before entering Old Sacramento as they approach the Crocker Art Museum.
Approximately six miles of the USA Track & Field certified marathon course will be inside William Land Park. The course follows the Sacramento River north toward Old Town. The route is an out-and-back course that will be repeated again by marathon-division runners. The course is flat and often shaded.
Various registration options are available via entry forms in many Northern California running stores. Online registration is also available via Active.com (http://www.active.com). There is no race-day registration.
A newly designed T-shirt, a full-range of age-group awards and random prizes will be awarded in a post-race awards ceremony.
The addition of the Downtown Sacramento Holiday Inn as the marathon's host facility gives the event an ideally located hotel for runners. Race registration, runners' packet pickup and the marathon's pre-race expo will all be located at the hotel.
A special hotel room rate has been secured for runners and their guests. The Downtown Holiday Inn is located on Capital Plaza, 300 J Street, Sacramento, Ca. Tel. 916-446-0100 or 800-465-4329. (Mention the code 1MSM for marathon special room rates.)
The Sacramento Marathon, a non-profit event, will also benefit Ronald McDonald House and Shriners Hospital For Children, both located in Sacramento.
Sacramento Marathon sponsors include:
Fleet Feet of Sacramento, KHTK (Sports 1140 AM), Reebok, Racewalking International and UC Davis Medical Group.
