Times To Beat Unveiled
Arlington, VA June 10, 2004 -- Beat Oprah Becomes Mantra To Marathoners. Completing a marathon has been a goal for people of all ages and backgrounds for years. Benchmarks such as losing weight, stopping smoking or beating Oprah’s time in the Marine Corps Marathon help guide and motivate runners through their marathon careers. Now, marathoners can wear their motivation on their shirts with the Times To Beat clothing line, unveiled by Arlington, Virginia’s Event Axis.
When musician, producer and fashion designer P. Diddy ran the New York City Marathon in 2003, his goal was to beat Oprah Winfrey. Indeed, he completed the race with a time of 4:14:54 and raised $1,000,000 for charity.
“The whole marathon world and even those unfamiliar with running were entertained by P. Diddy’s training and running the marathon,” said Mark Mooney, Event Axis President. “There just aren’t that many sporting events where the average person can use a celebrity’s achievements as their personal benchmark…marathoning provides this opportunity.”
Oprah, with the help of a trainer, seemed to bring marathons to a whole new level of visibility and motivation for ordinary people when she ran a 4:29:20 at the Marine Corps Marathon in 1994.
Other celebrities who have gone the 26.2 miles include current President George W. Bush, comedian Will Ferrell, former Vice President Al Gore, rock star David Lee Roth, supermodel Kim Alexis, and reality TV show winner Bill Rancic.
The Times To Beat line was announced to an amused response at the 2004 Boston Marathon. It was quickly added to retailer’s racks in the Washington, DC area including Fleet Feet Sports, Gotta Run and Pacer’s.
Gotta Run owner Andre Williams said, “People just like it. The Times To Beat line is fun and inspirational.”
