Marathon Man Sean "P Diddy" Combs
February 19, 2004--If there’s one thing the world has learned, is that you can’t limit Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. He has expanded his scope from music to fashion to acting to advertising and most important to social and humanitarian causes. It is for the latter that the Urban Fashion Awards Show takes great pleasure in announcing that Sean Combs, Urban Fashion Innovator, will be named the recipient of the prestigious Humanitarian Award at the Urban Fashion Awards Show on February 25, 2004 in Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mack Center.
After turning his Bad Boy Records/Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group into the one of leading hip-hop music companies around, Mr. Combs focused his attention to fashion, creating Sean John clothing, which too as proved to be equally as innovative. Not one to rest on his laurels, Mr. Combs ventured into various business arenas. He now owns and operates the Justin’s Restaurant chain and Blue Flame Marketing and Advertising firm. This spring, he’ll open the first freestanding Sean John clothing store in the heart of Manhattan. Mr. Combs is constantly challenging himself creatively. Having continued to produce hit records, discover talent, and emerge as a top-selling hip-hop artist in his own right, Mr. Combs is now in the acting arena. With a few movies already under his belt, including the critically acclaimed “Monsters Ball” with Academy Award-winner Halle Berry, Mr. Combs is set to star on Broadway this spring in the classic play “A Raisin In The Sun.”
Besides all the achievements, Mr. Combs has strived throughout his life to fulfill his “private vow to give back to the community that supported him in his youth and career.” On this end, he created Daddy’s House Social Programs in 1995. Run with executive director Sister Souljah, Combs uses Daddy’s House to fund innovative youth programs, including Daddy’s House Weekend Boys & Girls Club, which provides academic tutoring and life skills for nearly 800 boys and girls every weekend throughout the school year. There’s also: Daddy’s House on Wall Street, a three-week program that teaches fundamentals of the stock market and practical financial skills; Daddy’s House College Tour for high school students, a three-week tour of college campuses; Daddy’s House International Travel Group, which offers students an opportunity to travel around then world to such destinations as South Africa and Ghana to learn about trade, culture, commerce and international relations; and Daddy’s Sleep Away Camp, which takes 200 inner city kids to sleep-away camp every summer. Combs also personally overseas the Bad Boy internship program. And every holiday season, he sponsors the Daddy’s House Annual Food Drive.
With an emphasis on helping underprivileged children, Combs donated 100 computers to Harlem public schools in 2000. Taking his dedication to education even further, in 2003 Sean Combs ran in the NYC Marathon. Calling the event “Diddy Runs The City,” Mr. Combs completed the 26.2-mile marathon and raised $2 million for children’s charities and the New York Public School System. In addition to his own causes, Mr. Combs also lends his support to others, such as The Hip Hop Summit Action Network’s Voter’s Registration Drive, VH-1’s “Save The Music,” and pediatric AIDS charities.
